Two intact mummified scratches were wrapped with rope around them.

The mummies, including an adult and a child, were found in the ancient religious sanctuary, which has been excavated by archaeologists since 1981.

The mummies are one of three intact mummies in a total of 70 tombs discovered in the Huaca Pucllana catacombs, a pyramid temple built during the Wari period, pre-Columbian, around 100-600 AD.

Among them, the children's mummies are believed by scientists to have been sacrificed to the gods and may have been buried alive after the deaths of the adults. Both were placed in a squatting position and wrapped in ropes. Next to the two mummies were objects carved in the shape of mice and cats.

“This is one of the most important discoveries in more than three decades of excavations, because the mummies are intact,” researcher Gladys Paz told AFP. Previously, in 2010, archaeologists found the remains of a woman with four children, and in 2008, they discovered the remains of a teenage girl.

The ancient sanctuary is known to have been built on 2.5 hectares of land and towers over 20 meters high. So far, only about 40% of the area has been excavated. The Wari culture flourished between 500 and 1000 AD on the northern coastal region of Peru. However, surviving papyrus texts about this civilization are very rare.
