This discovery is the result of surveys from July 2010 to January 2011 by a group of scientists including Dr. Hoang Duc Huy from the Department of Biology (University of Natural Sciences, Ho Chi Minh City) and Dr. Bryan Stuart from the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences - USA. The Southern yellow-fronted box turtle was first recorded in 1998 in Ho Chi Minh City through an investigation of wildlife trade activities.

No scientist has ever encountered this turtle species in the wild. This discovery during the International Year of the Turtle 2011 is a motivation for scientists to continue exploring the natural habitat of rare turtle species, thereby proposing and implementing effective conservation solutions.
