According to the Mexican Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), the above relics were found in an excavation area of about 1,000 hectares in the town of Sitpach, 5km east of Merida city.

Here, archaeologists have discovered many architectural works, pottery and a significant number of ancient tombs.

In particular, pottery fragments found from the Late Classic Maya period (400 BC - AD 200) have confirmed the hypothesis that there were inhabitants in the northern Yucatán Peninsula from 400 BC, not during the Classic period (200 BC - AD 600) as previously assumed.

In addition, at the Oxmul relic site, scientists also discovered 75 burials and many buried ceramics.

According to archaeologist Luis Raúl Pantoja, coordinator of the Merida Regional Archaeological Project, the above-mentioned discoveries have changed the previously established chronology of the ancient Maya culture in the northern Yucatán region, showing that their settlement time was earlier and that there was social stratification.
