A forgotten city at the bottom of the Mediterranean will be revealed in a special documentary program in the near future..

Archaeologists are studying a statue of the god Hapi, discovered in front of a temple in part of the submerged city of Heracleion.

Known as Heracleion to the ancient Greeks and Thonis to the ancient Egyptians, the city was a port for both cultures. It was discovered in 2000, 6.4km off the Egyptian coast and submerged 9m below the Aboukir Bay.

The 13-year excavation by French archaeologist Dr. Frank Goddio will be revealed to viewers in the program Egypt's Sunken City - A Legend is Revealed. The program will be broadcast on French and German television on May 11.

During the excavation, Doctor Goddio found a giant red monument of the god Hapi, ancient boats and a stone chapel.

At a press conference at the universityOxfordEarlier this year, experts said the ancient city sank because of its heavy structures built on clay. Others, however, believe that massive floods submerged it.
