According to AP, the wreck was discovered a few months ago on the seabed, at a depth of 120 meters and located about 1.6 kilometers from the island of Gozo. The ship may have sunk while traveling between Sicily and Malta.

The ship was found in good condition and was dated to 700 BC. At the site, the team discovered 20 whetstones and 50 amphorae, a narrow-necked type typically used to hold wine.

"The discovery is considered very unique because it is the oldest shipwreck in the Mediterranean region and is still in a good state of preservation," Nature World News quoted Timmy Gambin, head of the search team at the University of Malta, as saying.

According to the group, the ship's artifacts belong to the Phoenician civilization, a civilization that relied on maritime trade throughout the Mediterranean region between 1150 and 300 BC. People during this period often used large boats to travel and transport goods.
