Good news for the tourism industry in early 2013 is that the Prime Minister has just officially approved the “Master plan for Vietnam tourism development to 2020, vision to 2030”. This is an important legal basis for Vietnam tourism to accelerate its development in the coming years.

With the view of developing tourism in a professional, modern, focused and key direction, Vietnam tourism will focus on building a "green tourism" foundation, linking tourism activities with preserving and promoting natural resources and protecting the ecological environment. This is an important factor to create attractiveness and determine the quality, value of tourism enjoyment and tourism brand. Vietnam tourism does not develop in a widespread manner as in the past, but prioritizes the development of main product lines such as: A system of sea tourism products with the ability to compete in the region for sea resorts, sightseeing of seascapes, marine ecosystems; cultural tourism products associated with heritage, festivals; strongly developing culinary tourism; focusing on eco-tourism products, cave exploration, mountain tourism, agricultural and rural eco-tourism.

The general goal is that by 2020, Vietnam tourism will basically become a spearhead economic sector, with professionalism, a synchronous and modern system of technical and material facilities; high-quality, diverse, branded tourism products, imbued with national cultural identity, competitive with countries in the region and the world. By 2030, Vietnam tourism will become a country with a developed tourism industry. Based on that common goal, the whole country will develop 7 tourism regions (the midlands and mountainous areas of the North; the Red River Delta; the North Central region; the South Central Coast; the Central Highlands; the Southeast region and the Mekong Delta) with typical products for each region and build 46 national tourist areas, 41 national tourist destinations. Of which, attention will be paid to developing 12 tourist cities including: Sa Pa (Lao Cai), Do Son (Hai Phong), Ha Long (Quang Ninh); Sam Son (Thanh Hoa), Cua Lo (Nghe An), Hue (Thua Thien-Hue), Da Nang (Da Nang City), Hoi An (Quang Nam), Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa), Phan Thiet (Binh Thuan), Da Lat (Lam Dong), Vung Tau (Ba Ria-Vung Tau). In 2020, the tourism industry strives to attract 10.5 million international visitors, serving 47.5 million domestic visitors; international visitor growth is 7%/year, domestic is 5.1%/year. Total revenue from tourists reaches 372 trillion VND, equivalent to 18.5 billion USD. By 2030, the number of international visitors will increase to 18 million and domestic visitors to 71 million; growth is 5.2% and 4.1%/year, respectively. Total revenue from tourists will reach 708 trillion VND, equivalent to 35.2 billion USD.

This is a large-scale strategy for developing Vietnam's tourism with an investment capital of 1,931 trillion VND (equivalent to 94.2 billion USD) and the participation of many ministries, central branches and all provinces and cities in the country. Not only does it have an increasingly high growth rate and increasingly large contributions to the State budget, but through the development of the tourism strategy, it also creates more jobs for society, contributes to sustainable poverty reduction, ensures social security; at the same time, contributes to preserving and promoting Vietnamese cultural values, improving the spiritual and cultural life of the people, strengthening national pride, promoting Vietnamese culture and people to the world.
