Developing brackish water shrimp farming industry towards sustainability
(Baonghean.vn)-On December 5, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with the People's Committee of Nghe An province to organize a conference to summarize the 2013 shrimp farming season and deploy the 2014 farming plan of the northern provinces.
Attending the conference were Mr. Vu Van Tam - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, leaders of the Directorate of Fisheries, the Department of Veterinary Medicine, agricultural research institutes, universities, associations, shrimp farming and production experts, and representatives of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the northern provinces.

At the Conference, delegates discussed and sought measures to develop the shrimp farming industry, manage diseases, find stable consumption markets, etc. In 2014, the aquaculture industry continued to set the goal of maintaining stable area and output of black tiger shrimp, increasing white-leg shrimp area by 20-30%, focusing on developing intensive and semi-intensive shrimp farming on farm and household scale with guaranteed conditions.

Nghe An has a large natural area, a large aquaculture water surface and other favorable conditions for developing the shrimp farming industry. In recent years, the province has strongly developed the shrimp farming industry with the basic orientations of intensive farming, economic efficiency associated with climate change adaptation. In 2013, despite continuous natural disasters and storms and floods, the province's shrimp farming targets were quite high. The total shrimp farming area in the province reached 2,190 hectares, the total output reached 6,500 tons, the average yield reached 4.24 tons/ha. This year in particular, the consumption market was favorable, the selling price of commercial shrimp was quite high, so shrimp farmers earned hundreds of millions of VND/ha. In the coming years, Nghe An province will continue to develop the brackish water shrimp farming industry in a sustainable direction, in accordance with the available potential of the locality.
