Man sentenced to prison for selling fake cancer treatment drugs

Hanoi People's Court brought defendant Nguyen Cong Doanh (born 1981, in Hoang Mai, Hanoi) to trial for the crime of Trading in counterfeit food products, according to the provisions of Clause 1, Article 157 of the Penal Code.

Previously, at 10:00 a.m. on May 17, 2017, the working group of the Economic Crime Investigation Police Department - Hanoi City Police on duty in Dam Trau area, Bach Dang ward, Hai Ba Trung district discovered Doanh carrying 4 cardboard boxes containing 10 bottles of Vidatox brand cancer treatment support functional food, without invoices or documents proving the origin.

Doanh admitted that the drugs were counterfeit and that he was selling them to customers. According to Doanh's statement, in early 2015, he was hired as a collaborator to sell Vidatox brand functional foods for Hung Thang company.

Seeing that the market demand for Vidatox cancer treatment support functional foods was very large, Doanh came up with the idea of ​​buying fake Vidatox products to sell for profit.

To carry out the intention, Doanh established BIDU Vietnam Trading and Import-Export Company Limited with diverse business lines, including the functional food business line.

In early April 2017, Doanh went online to learn about product information and contacted two people named Huy and Minh (unknown background) to order fake functional products labeled Vidatox Plus and Vidatox 30CH, priced at 950,000 VND/product to sell for profit.

According to the quotation of Hung Thang Import-Export and Trading Joint Stock Company, 1 box of Vidatox Plus medicine is worth nearly 6 million VND. The business has traded 47 boxes of fake Vidatox Plus medicine with the same value as the real one, earning a profit of nearly 300 million VND.

In court, Doanh said that his father also had cancer. Realizing the great demand for Vidatox cancer treatment support products, Doanh sought to get rich by selling counterfeit products.

Considering that the defendant's criminal acts seriously violated human rights and health, and that a severe punishment was necessary to deter and educate criminals and prevent the general public, the panel sentenced the defendant to 42 months in prison.
