New method of deep vein thrombosis surgery
The Department of Vascular Surgery at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City has successfully performed surgery on a patient with complex deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremities by combining surgery and venous stent placement, the first time this has been done in Vietnam.

The hospital said that patient NNL (48 years old, in Tien Giang) was admitted to the Emergency Department (June 7) with a painful left leg, starting to turn purple and swollen from the foot up to the thigh.
Vascular ultrasound and venography results showed that the deep veins in the patient's left leg were completely blocked by blood clots, spreading from the small veins in the calf to the large veins in the abdomen.
Based on the above results, the doctor diagnosed the patient with severe acute deep vein thrombosis, with the risk of leg necrosis if not treated promptly. To save the patient, the doctors performed surgery to remove the thrombus in the vein, then dilated the balloon and placed a stent to repair the narrowed iliac vein.
After surgery, the patient's veins no longer had blood clots; the narrowed iliac vein was widened, allowing blood to flow back to the heart easily.
Currently, the patient has been discharged from the hospital.
Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital is the first unit in the country to successfully apply the surgical method combined with endovascular intervention to treat acute venous thrombosis for suitable patients.
Dr. Le Thanh Phong, Head of the Department of Vascular Surgery, said this was the most difficult case among the patients successfully treated with this new method at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.
