Successful tumor surgery for 99-year-old Vietnamese Heroic Mother

(Baonghean.vn) -Nghe An Oncology Hospital has just successfully performed surgery to remove a tumor in the breast of Vietnamese Heroic Mother Vu Thi Dung (99 years old) in Dien Doai commune, Dien Chau district.

Dung's mother had an only son, martyr Nguyen The Co, who died in 1972 on the Quang Tri front. Dung's mother was known to have had extremely difficult circumstances. Before her only son joined the army and died, her husband, Nguyen The Toan, also suffered from a serious illness and died in 1960.

The day she received the news that her son had died on the battlefield, Dung's mother cried her eyes out. Trying to hold back the pain in her heart, she struggled to get up alone, taking care of the fields, the farm, and burning incense for her husband and children. In 1995, Dung's mother was awarded the title of Vietnamese Heroic Mother by the President. A few years later, the local government coordinated with a number of agencies and units to build a house of gratitude for her mother.

In 2007, Dung's mother had to be hospitalized to have her eye lens replaced, and since then, her health has been deteriorating. During this time, she discovered a small lump in her chest, but because she did not want to bother her relatives and those around her, Dung's mother kept her illness a secret.

In early 2013, after an illness, the tumor in her breast ruptured, leaked fluid and was in too much pain, Dung's mother told Mr. Nguyen The San (64 years old), her nephew, who had taken care of her for over 40 years. Immediately, Mr. San and his wife took their mother to the Oncology Hospital for examination and treatment. After a consultation, the doctors concluded that the malignant tumor in Dung's mother's breast was leaking fluid and needed emergency surgery. The surgery was successful, and the tumor in Dung's mother's breast was removed. Doctor Nguyen Dinh Tao, who directly treated Dung's mother, said that he was conducting tests and consultations to come up with the next positive treatment direction. In the near future, if Dung's mother's health improves, the hospital will conduct chemotherapy for her.

Mr. Nguyen The San, who is taking care of Dung's mother at the hospital, said: as soon as the surgery was successful, a sponsor of her mother and the Director of Nghe An Oncology Hospital came to her bedside to encourage, visit and hope that her mother would soon overcome her illness.
