Movie 'That Boy': Son Tung M-TP acts very well
As predicted, The Boy of That Year (KB - Director: Quang Huy) premiered nationwide from December 31st and will become the only Vietnamese film worth watching in early 2015. Like Idol, also directed by musician Quang Huy, this film brings viewers a natural, emotional, and therefore familiar story.
The film's "quintuplet" is played by Son Tung M-TP (as Dinh Phong), Hua Vi Van (Lam), Pham Quynh Anh (Pham Quynh Bang), Ngo Kien Huy (Ngo Kien Ha) and Hari Won (Sky), who act quite well together. They are a group of like-minded friends - including two couples and a music manager with opposite personalities - who all want to help Dinh Phong fulfill his passion for singing and doing live shows in his final days. The film is based on the memoirs of Wanbi Tuan Anh (1987 - 2013) and is made to commemorate this male singer, so it can be said that Dinh Phong is the image of Wanbi Tuan Anh himself.

Not just a singer "passing through" the movie
Even if there is prejudice, we still have to admit that the role of Dinh Phong was performed very well by Son Tung M-TP, naturally and emotionally. Being natural may be easy, because in real life and in the movie, he played the role of a singer, singing the song "Chac ai do se ve" together; but to have a role filled with emotion is rare in Vietnamese movies today, when most of them just act stiffly. The emotion does not come from facial muscles or external gestures, but from true inner vibrations, where Son Tung M-TP deeply immersed himself in the role of Dinh Phong.
The remaining four singers in the "quintuplet" also performed quite well, where Lam's silent endurance, Kien Ha's fun and straightforwardness, Quynh Bang's romanticism and fierceness, and Sky's innocence and loveliness became different levels in the frame of reference with Dinh Phong.
Perhaps it should be mentioned that in the previous movie Idol, also about the singing world, Quang Huy was quite successful in creating an acting impression for Hoang Thuy Linh and singers such as Ngo Kien Huy, Hua Vi Van, Cuong Seven, Pham Quynh Anh...
From these two points, musician Quang Huy has shown his strengths, because his musical work has helped him understand the personality of each singer, it helps him a lot in creating character images. So, if you want singers, models, hot girls, hot boys… to act in movies, first of all, the director must understand and share their strengths, a requirement that seems as old as the earth, but very few Vietnamese directors today can do it.
Quang Huy is a director
Quang Huy had produced many music videos before making his first movie: Idol. Remember, before this movie was released, there were rumors that it could be “a long music video”. Then there were malicious opinions that the reason Quang Huy was able to make the movie was because he had a skilled director (Phan Xine [?]) and a professional crew to help him, because he could hardly do it by himself.
I don’t know if there is anyone “behind” The Boy of That Year, but looking at the appearance from the outside, it seems to be “the same” as Idol, made by the same person. The film is a collective product, the director only keeps the common soul, if there is really someone behind to help Quang Huy, that’s even better, because it only makes the film better quality. With this film, it seems that Quang Huy has become a proper film director.
Furthermore, one must remember that it is the director who creates the motivation for the film to be formed, the person behind is just the person behind, because if they could make Idol, That Year's Boy, Quang Huy would not need to be named director. This is similar to when making monuments, where the artisans and sculptors are the main workers, but the sculptor is named author, because they are the ones who create the motivation (for example, hiring) for the artisans and specialists to work.
