Recently, the movie “Unbroken” directed by Angelina Jolie has been criticized a lot in Japan. The movie even faces the possibility of being banned in this country.

Many Japanese nationalist activists criticized the film as racist and immoral, with images of Japanese soldiers severely abusing American prisoners of war. They said that it was an extreme way of expressing, “contrary to the truth” and deeply misleading to viewers.

In this country, opponents of the film have even launched a petition about the film on a website called Change.org. Currently, there are more than 80,000 signatures to protest “Unbroken” and request to stop the film’s release.

The film is based on the book “Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption”, written by Laura Hillenbrand and published in 2010. The film is based on the life story of Louis Zamperini, an American Olympic athlete and Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force. He is a veteran who survived World War II.

The character Louis Zamperini, played by actor Jack O'Connell, is depicted in the film as he is brutally beaten and tortured by Japanese naval soldiers. He endured painful months from his capture in the Pacific in July 1943 until the end of the war in August 1945.

The film also details how the pilots were tortured by the Japanese prison guard, Mutsuhiro Watanabe. The prison guard, nicknamed “Bird,” was a real person and was listed as one of Japan’s 40 most wanted war criminals. The content even allegedly accused Watanabe of participating in cannibalism and being present in experiments on prisoners.

Hiromichi Moteki, a representative of the Japanese nationalist organization, said that these were absurd fabrications. Mr. Moteki said: "If the things that the veteran Zamperini said were not verified, anyone could have made up the story in such a way. This film has unreliable and immoral content."

Angelina Jolie has yet to comment on the film, which is expected to be released in the US this Christmas.
