Comedy about male ego wins top prize at London Film Festival

The film Chavalier is considered both satirical and profound when telling the story of a group of men participating in a masculinity contest.

Chevalier, directed by Greek director Athina Rachel Tsangari, was awarded the "Best Film" award at the London Film Festival (BFI), England. Chevalier beat out potential contenders including Beasts of No Nation by Cary Fukunaga, Son of Saul by László Nemes, and especially the big-budget musical film Office by veteran Hong Kong director Johnnie To.

The head of the jury - director Pawel Pawlikowski - commented: "Chevalier offers a unique, sharp and satirical look at the male ego as well as the human mentality in Europe today".

The story is about six men on a ferry who must compete in a manhood contest. The winner will be awarded a ring and the title of Chavalier (Knight).

The Witch, directed by American Robert Eggers, won the award for Best First Feature. This is a horror film made in a period style that attracted attention at the Sundance Film Festival in February. Sherpa, directed by Australian Jennifer Peedom, was awarded the award for Best Documentary. The film tells the story of the lives of the Sherpa people - indigenous people in Nepal and their conflicts with foreign tourists when they lead visitors to conquer Mount Everest.

Established in 1957, the London Film Festival is one of the most prominent film festivals in Europe. This year, more than 46 films by female directors were selected to participate in the festival out of a total of 240 works. The film Flapping in the Middle of Nowhere by Vietnamese director Nguyen Hoang Diep was selected to be screened in the "Films in Dare" category. The 12-day festival concluded on the evening of October 18 with the closing film, Steve Jobs by Danny Boyle.

In recent years, the top prizes from here have also had a good chance of winning Oscars. Last year, the winner of the "Best Foreign Language Film" Oscar - Ida - won the award at the previous BFI.
