The six-minute film, titled "Sleigh Bells" featuring the lucky rabbit Oswald, was released in 1928 and lost until it was discovered by a researcher while looking at the online catalogue of the BFI's national archive.
Oswald, the rabbit beloved for his mischievous and rebellious personality, was created by animators Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks for Universal in 1927, before they created Mickey Mouse.
Many versions of the Oswald the Rabbit film still exist, but the "Sleigh Bells" version has been lost since its creation. The only copy of the film has been restored at Walt Disney Studios and will be shown in London on December 12.
Robin Baker, head of the BFI Archives, said the film will introduce modern audiences to one of Walt Disney's earliest, largely unknown creations.
Walt Disney Studios Chairman Andrew Millstein also believes that many of the studio's early works may be lost.
