Touching short film about a single father

The 10-minute work - "The Last Letter" - revolves around the story of a father with two children who lives alone in his last days.

The Last Letter is a short film that was introduced in China in 2011 but has only recently become widely known in Vietnam. The work is one of the impressive debut short films of young director Vuong Dong Giam, who graduated from the Beijing Film Academy - Faculty of Fine Arts in 2005. He is currently the director of many commercials on Chinese television.

The 10-minute film begins with a dour old man receiving test results from the hospital, which reveal that he is seriously ill. Leaving the hospital, he visits each of his children and asks if they can come visit him on Saturday. But the father receives unexpected answers. When he returns to his empty house, he talks to his deceased wife's clothes. On her birthday, he celebrates her birthday alone... The film ends with the father's heartfelt words to his two children in a letter.

Although the details inserted in the script are not really convincing, the story touches readers because of the actors' acting and the father's loving words.

The main actor who plays the role of the old father in the film is a worker named Trieu Lien Phuc, born in 1951. Thanks to his natural austere appearance, good makeup and lighting, and natural acting, Trieu Lien Phuc makes the audience believe in a father who suffers loss and disadvantage but always loves his children dearly.

The Last Letter is part of a trend of short films that explore the theme of family and modern society that has created a buzz among young filmmakers in China in particular and Asia in general. At the end of 2012, a group of famous Chinese stars such as Truong Quoc Lap, Chau Tan, Co Thien Lac, La Chi Tuong... also participated in a 10-minute short film that spoke of a thought-provoking and widely spread message - Bringing happiness home.
