At Nam Can border gate, the main import and export activities are forestry products, agricultural products, groceries, construction materials, and temporarily imported and re-exported petroleum.

In recent years, some passengers entering and exiting the country have taken advantage of the border crossing to carry out smuggling, trade fraud, illegal trading and transportation of drugs, weapons, explosives, wild animals, livestock, etc., which has been very complicated, especially in the areas around the border gates and along the border trails. The method is to hide and cover up goods in motorbike trunks, old battery cases, sacks, etc., or take advantage of vehicles carrying bulky goods such as agricultural products to hide and transport drugs, weapons, explosives, and wild animals.
In recent times, Nghe An Customs and Nghe An Border Guard have closely coordinated in inspection and control according to their functions, contributing to ensuring peace and stability in the border area. In particular, from 2010 to now, the two forces have discovered and arrested many cases of smuggling across the border. Typically, the Nam Can International Border Gate Customs Branch coordinated with Nam Can Border Guard Station to arrest 1 subject in a case of smuggling and illegally transporting 44 kg of wild animal legs across the border; discovered and handled 2 cases of illegally transporting 8 kg of various types of firecrackers across the border. Carrying out the task of fighting against drugs on the border, the functional forces broke up Project 307L, caught Tho Gia Hua (from Tri Le, Que Phong) red-handed, seized 1 heroin cake, and destroyed a drug trafficking ring from Laos into the commune's interior for consumption. In recent times, the Customs Department and Border Guard have regularly and continuously conducted joint inspection and control activities at border gate areas to detect, promptly combat, prevent, and arrest illegal entry and exit subjects, and those violating border area regulations. Also in recent times, on the road border gate route, the Customs Department and Border Guard have coordinated to carry out entry and exit procedures, import and export, inspection, control, and supervision of traffic through the border gate for more than 252,631 people entering and exiting the country, 370,330 people entering and exiting across the border, for 140,796 vehicles, 190,815 tons of goods of all kinds; 438,067 m3 of wood; 32,656 rattan fibers; 1,265 sets of imported motorcycle components; 202,230 tons of goods of all kinds...
With close coordination in checking and controlling people, vehicles, and goods entering and exiting the country, importing and exporting according to the provisions of law, the Customs sector and the Border Guard have created favorable conditions for people and vehicles to pass through the border gate, without causing inconvenience or overlap, and at the same time, promptly detecting violations, actively contributing to firmly protecting border security and sovereignty.
