(Baonghean)- Nghe An is a province with a relatively large poultry population of over 15 million. However, poultry farming in Nghe An is still small-scale, fragmented, free-range, seasonal duck farming, and field farming... mainly. Therefore, it is very difficult to manage diseases as well as organize vaccinations for poultry.

In recent years, the disease situation in poultry has been very complicated. Many outbreaks of bird flu have occurred in many localities in the province, causing many poultry to die and be destroyed.

Since the beginning of 2012, bird flu has occurred in 3 communes in 2 districts: Yen Thanh (2 communes: Lang Thanh and Phu Thanh) and Quynh Giang commune, Quynh Luu district, causing great losses to farmers. The total number of poultry infected with the disease and forced to be destroyed is: 5,961 (3,810 ducks, 1,920 chickens and 231 geese).

Small-scale duck farming is the reason why it is difficult to control avian influenza.

Given the complicated developments of the avian influenza epidemic, combined with unfavorable rainy and cold weather conditions, and the lack of suitable vaccines to vaccinate poultry flocks... the risk of avian influenza outbreaks in our province in the coming time is very high.

In order to limit the occurrence of avian influenza and prevent its spread, protect people's health, and stabilize production, all levels, sectors, and breeders need to implement the following solutions well:

- Strengthen monitoring, early detection of epidemics, timely reporting of epidemics to handle epidemics on a small scale; When there are sick or dead poultry suspected of having avian influenza, it is necessary to immediately notify the veterinary agency for inspection, diagnosis, and collection of samples for testing.

- Encourage farmers to gradually shift from small-scale, fragmented poultry farming to concentrated poultry farming, farm farming, and apply biosafety measures in livestock farming. Focus on clear origin of breeds, with quarantine from veterinary agencies.

- Fully vaccinate new flocks, re-flocks or flocks that have expired their immunity against avian influenza. Pay special attention to thoroughly vaccinating duck flocks, because healthy duck flocks still carry avian influenza virus at over 12.2%, which is a very high risk of causing and spreading avian influenza.

- Organize and synchronously deploy disinfection work in epidemic areas, high-risk areas, livestock areas, and barns using Benkocid chemicals and lime powder. Instruct livestock farmers to buy lime powder... and regularly disinfect barns, collect manure and garbage, and compost bio-thermal compost to destroy pathogens.

- Strengthen inspection and strict control of the transportation of poultry and poultry products in the area, especially poultry for breeding.

- Instruct farmers to take good care of poultry. Prepare enough food such as bran, corn flour, rice, concentrate, vitamins, minerals... to increase the resistance of poultry. Ensure enough clean water for the livestock. The barn must be kept dry, regularly change the bedding, cover the barn warm enough, avoid drafts and rain that can make the barn wet.

- Organize a standing force to proactively respond when an epidemic occurs, not allowing the epidemic to spread widely. Particularly in communes with flu outbreaks, it is necessary to strictly manage the outbreak, not allowing people to sell poultry to spread the epidemic, and not allowing the movement of wild ducks out of the area.

- Propaganda on the loudspeaker system of the commune and hamlet about the situation of avian influenza epidemic, the dangers of influenza, instruct people on preventive measures so that people can proactively implement them, specifically:

- Propaganda for people not to eat sick poultry, not to eat raw poultry blood pudding and uncooked poultry products, when in contact with poultry must wear personal protection, wash hands with clean water and soap after contact and processing poultry.

- Propaganda and mobilize poultry breeders, traders, transporters, and slaughterers of poultry and poultry products to be vigilant against avian influenza, actively implement disease prevention measures, and proactively report when detecting poultry showing signs of suspected influenza.

- Instruct farmers to actively implement biosafety measures, disinfect and sterilize barns, recommend farmers to buy livestock breeds with clear origins and cooperate with the Veterinary Department in disease prevention. At the same time, organize propaganda and educate farmers to prevent the indiscriminate dumping of dead poultry, causing disease spread and environmental pollution.
