(Baonghean) - This year, all 260 hectares of rice in Tao Son commune (Anh Son) were damaged by leaf rollers. The commune has provided over 5,000 packages of specific medicine as recommended by the Plant Protection Station to organize for people to prevent the disease on the entire infected area.

Ms. Pham Thi Hai - Head of the Agriculture Department of Tao Son commune said: After spraying, the density of worms decreased.

many. However, through the latest inspection, brown planthoppers and white-backed planthoppers have appeared in many rice fields in Bu and Cam fields of the commune with a density of 300 - 500 individuals/m2. Many areas have yellow leaf disease. The commune is focusing on directing people to actively stay in the fields to take care of and prevent pests and diseases to protect summer-autumn crops.

This summer-autumn crop, the whole Tan Ky district planted over 4,300 hectares of seasonal rice and 1,400 hectares of corn. The fourth generation of small leaf rollers has caused damage to the fields of the whole district with a density of 500 - 600 individuals/m2. To organize prevention, the district People's Committee has issued a mechanism to support 50% of the price of medicine for people. Mr. Nguyen Van Trinh - Head of the Plant Protection Station of Tan Ky district, said: On July 25, according to the general plan of the province, the first round of preventive spraying for the fourth generation of leaf rollers has been temporarily suspended. However, the whole district has only organized for people to spray 3,129 hectares out of over 4,300 hectares of rice infected with leaf rollers that need to be sprayed. Some communes did not complete the target such as Ky Tan achieved 40 ha/130 ha of rice, Huong Son achieved 60/170 ha of rice, Phu Son achieved 65/150 ha of rice... When people were advised to spray for prevention, they were subjective because they did not see worms, and sprayed when the worms had developed and turned the fields white, so it was ineffective, this also created an opportunity for the 5th generation of small leaf rollers to develop.

This summer-autumn crop season, the whole province planted over 97,000 hectares of rice, over 11,000 hectares of corn, 1,000 hectares of peanuts, over 5,900 hectares of vegetables, and over 4,000 hectares of beans. According to assessments, all crops are growing well. However, as of July 26, the whole province had 70,654 hectares damaged by the fourth generation of leaf rollers, of which 20,192 hectares were moderately infected and 44,538.8 hectares were severely infected. Districts with high density of infected areas such as: Dien Chau, Quynh Luu, each district over 6,000 hectares, Yen Thanh over 3,000 hectares, Nam Dan 3,100 hectares, Anh Son nearly 1,300 hectares... The whole province has deployed for people to spray and eradicate 65,516.6 hectares (of which the first spraying area is 60,842 hectares, the second spraying is 4,674.6 hectares).

Along with leaf rollers, brown planthoppers, white-backed planthoppers and bacterial leaf spot, bacterial streak has emerged and caused damage in some districts. Currently, summer-autumn rice is in the heading stage, while winter-spring rice is in the tillering to standing stage. However, according to the report of the provincial Plant Protection Department, there are more than 200 hectares of rice infected with planthoppers concentrated in the districts of Do Luong, Con Cuong, and Anh Son. Planthoppers are mainly in the first and second instars, with a common density in the infected area of 750 - 1,500 individuals/m2, and in some cases 3,000 - 5,000 individuals/m2. Bacterial leaf spot and bacterial streak are also emerging and causing damage to summer-autumn rice in the districts of Dien Chau, Yen Thanh, and Quynh Luu with a total area of 104 hectares.

Protecting summer-autumn crops in the current unpredictable weather conditions is the top priority of the agricultural sector. Mr. Phan Duy Hai - Deputy Director of the provincial Plant Protection Department, said: Currently, the sector is directing people to actively stick to the fields. Localities need to proactively schedule field inspections to support and continue to propagate to people in preventing and controlling the fifth generation of small leaf rollers on the summer-autumn rice area in particular and pests and diseases on crops in general. Currently, brown planthoppers and white-backed planthoppers are increasing in scope, level of damage, and the ability to cause severe damage on a large scale. This predicts the risk of causing "planthopper fire" at the stage of rice heading and flowering onwards. Bacterial leaf blight and bacterial streak spots are also at risk of arising and causing serious damage to rice areas from the stage of heading onwards, especially after heavy rains accompanied by wind and on muddy, overfertilized soil. For other crops, it is necessary to monitor and care for them by adding necessary fertilizers and nitrogen according to the correct technical process. For rice areas from tillering to flowering, it is recommended to spray brown planthoppers and white-backed planthoppers on areas with a density of 1,000 individuals/m2 or more with specific pesticides according to the prescribed list, spraying to ensure even wetting of the rice stem and leaves. For areas after flowering to wax ripening, spray on areas with a density of 2,000 individuals/m2 or more with contact and fumigating pesticides. For bacterial leaf blight and stripe disease, farmers should not use nitrogen, growth stimulants or foliar fertilizers on infected rice areas. In particular, localities need to strengthen inspection of recommendations, trading and use of plant protection drugs in the area. Timely detect and prevent the trading of poor quality drugs, drugs not on the list, and expired drugs that affect the results of prevention.
