On October 18, on social media in Thailand, there were calls for protests outside the BBC's representative office in Bangkok, as well as threats of personal attacks against BBC reporter Jonathan Head, accusing him of defaming the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Jonanthan Head is a veteran BBC correspondent based in Thailand for many years and is currently Vice President of the International Press Club of Thailand (FCCT).

Jonathan was the BBC's on-the-ground correspondent for the death of King Bhumibol and has also provided some analysis on Thailand's political future scenarios.

The journalist's comments have been criticised by royalists, and some live BBC programmes have also suffered unexplained technical glitches.

In 2008, Jonathan Head was sued by a number of royalist extremists for defamation of the Royal Family.

In recent days, many gatherings and sieges of houses of people accused of having made insulting remarks about the Royal Family have taken place in several provinces in Thailand.

Thai authorities have called on people to be vigilant against acts of defamation of the Royal Family, but to use legal proceedings and not resort to violence./.
