Heavy rain could not stop the Russian President from laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to mark the start of the Great Patriotic War.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 22to lay a wreath in memory of the unknown soldier in the Alexander Garden, outside the Kremlin, on the Day of Memory and Sorrow,despite the heavy rain, according toRT.

Images released by Russian media showed Mr. Putin standing bareheaded in silence in front of the memorial, despite heavy rain at the time. Senior officials in the delegation such asPrime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Federation Council Speaker Valentina Ivanovna Matvienko both did not carry umbrellas while waiting to lay flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Heavy rain poured down as Mr Putin laid the wreath.

"Day of Memory and Sorrow" in Russia is a celebration of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, when Nazi Germany began sending troops to attack the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941. Millions of soldiers and Soviet people died in the war to stop and repel the invading fascists.
