"Donald Trump was elected by the American people. At least for this reason you need to show respect to him even if you do not agree with some of his views," Tass news agency quoted Russian President Vladimir Putin as saying at a conference on diplomatic issues in Sochi on October 19.
According to Mr Putin, Americans are increasingly showing "disrespect" towards their own president. "This is an unfortunate negative element of the American political system," Mr Putin said. "They are actually preventing him from fulfilling any of the promises he made during the election campaign."
The Russian president said that Mr. Trump is facing difficulties but does not need outside advice. "A person needs a certain talent to be elected president without much political experience. He did this, won honestly," Mr. Putin said.
The Trump administration has been through a turbulent period as allegations of his campaign's ties to Russia have led to investigations. Russia has denied meddling in the 2016 US election, saying the Kremlin would cooperate with whoever occupies the White House.
