(Baonghean) - Before the court announced the verdict, a thin, haggard woman with red eyes sat in the audience and asked the court for permission to say a few words. She stood up and introduced herself as the mother of the two defendants Nguyen Ky Anh and Nguyen Dong Anh and asked the victims' families to forgive her for the mistakes her two sons had made.

Mrs. Pham Thi Nhan and Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung (living in Thanh Nam village, Bong Khe commune, Con Cuong district) have 5 children. The 4th child, Nguyen Ky Anh (born in 1992), is a weak child who did not learn to walk or talk until he was 3 years old. Although he is 22 years old, Ky Anh is short, weighs only 38kg, and does not know how to ride a bicycle or motorbike. However, Ky Anh has a stubborn personality, he dropped out of school after 10th grade, stayed home to learn from a group of bad friends in the entertainment village. At the age of 16, he knew about cigarettes, alcohol, and fighting. Whoever invited him to drink, he drank until he was drunk, whoever invited him to fight or slash, he immediately accepted. In 2012, Ky Anh was sentenced by Vinh City People's Court to 9 months in prison (with a suspended sentence) for "theft of property". Nguyen Dong Anh (born in 1993) is only one year younger than his brother. They are in the same class and are very close friends. Influenced by their brother's bad habits, both of them became bad people in the village. Despite their parents and siblings' best efforts to dissuade them, the couple still had the same bad habits.

Before that, at around 0:20 on April 5, 2014, two brothers Nguyen Ky Anh and Nguyen Dong Anh, along with Tran Van Cuong (born in 1995), Le Thanh Manh (born in 1995, residing in the same locality) rode two motorbikes driven by Cuong and Dong Anh from Don Phuc commune (Con Cuong district) home. When they reached Doc Truong section in Bong Khe commune, they encountered a motorbike going in the opposite direction driven by Ngan Van Khoi. Behind Khoi's motorbike were three people: Vi Van Sang (born in 1988), Luong Van Binh (born in 1999) and Vi Van Thuan (born in 1986), all residing in Na Duoi village, Mau Duc commune (Con Cuong district). Because he had drunk a lot of alcohol and could not control himself, Khoi swerved his motorbike. Seeing that, Cuong asked, "Why are you driving like that?", a person sitting on Khoi's motorbike said something in Thai. Because he didn't understand Thai, Cuong thought the person sitting in Mr. Khoi's car was cursing at him, so he told the group: "Chase after these guys and beat them up." Everyone agreed, turned around, and chased after Mr. Khoi's car.

Realizing that a car was chasing him, Mr. Khoi drove quickly towards Mau Duc commune. When he arrived at Giang Son gas station (in Mau Duc village), he saw that the lights were on, so Mr. Khoi drove straight into the gas station and stopped to call for help. When Mr. Khoi stopped, Cuong's group caught up and rushed forward. Seeing that, Mr. Khoi let go of the car and ran away, causing the 3 people sitting behind him to fall to the ground. Unable to chase and beat Mr. Khoi, Cuong's group rushed in and beat the remaining 3 people. Nguyen Ky Anh grabbed a wooden crutch nearby and hit Mr. Sang several times on the head, breaking the wooden crutch. Dong Anh, Manh and Cuong used belts and bamboo poles to continuously beat the 3 people.

When they saw Sang collapse on the ground, all four men got on their motorbikes and fled. Due to severe injuries, Vi Van Sang died on the way to the emergency room. Ngan Van Khoi, Luong Van Binh and Vi Van Thuan all suffered minor injuries. The forensic examination results of the authorities concluded that the cause of Sang's death was a fractured, collapsed skull and a brain hemorrhage due to trauma.

On the morning of August 26, the provincial People's Court brought Ky Anh, Dong Anh, Manh, and Cuong to trial for murder. Referring to the crimes of her two sons, Mrs. Nhan - the mother of defendants Ky Anh and Dong Anh, wiped away her tears and shared: "The two brothers are only 1 year apart in age, so they often go out together. I never expected them to cause such a terrible thing. Since the incident, the house has had nothing of value, I had to borrow money from a loan shark to have the 35 million VND to compensate the victim's family."

It is known that Ms. Pham Thi Nhan has been a local official for more than 20 years. During her time doing social work, she was trusted by the people and assigned many positions such as secretary of the commune youth union, member of the women's executive committee, head of the village women's association... She always completed her assigned tasks excellently and was awarded many certificates of merit by the commune and district authorities. Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung - her husband, spent decades fighting and dying on the Binh - Tri - Thien battlefield. After being discharged from the army, he returned to his hometown with a 1/4 disability.

She felt ashamed because she was responsible for propagating policies and laws to the people while her son was caught up in the law. She asked for leave many times but was always encouraged and advised by the people and the government to continue working. After reviewing the details of the case, it was found that Nguyen Ky Anh was the one who used a wooden crutch to repeatedly hit the victim in the head, causing her death, so he was sentenced to 16 years in prison; Le Thanh Manh to 12 years in prison; Tran Van Cuong to 10 years in prison and Nguyen Dong Anh to 8 years in prison.

The trial ended, the mother of the two guilty men fell to the ground and cried, her eyes still following the special vehicle transporting the prisoners until it disappeared...
