The spokesman for the US-led international anti-terror coalition in Iraq, Colonel Ryan Dillon, confirmed that the two sides had agreed and implemented a ceasefire.

He added that the international coalition wants both sides to extend the ceasefire so they can refocus on the fight against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) organization in Iraq.

Earlier on October 26, the United Nations Security Council urged the Iraqi government and the leaders of the Kurdish autonomous region to quickly set a schedule for negotiations to end the crisis that broke out after the Kurdish independence referendum on January 25.

The Security Council's call came after the Baghdad government rejected a proposal by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to "freeze" the results of the independence referendum and enter into dialogue.

After the illegal referendum, the Iraqi army launched a campaign to regain control of areas outside the Kurdish autonomous region./.
