Thai and Cambodian troops withdraw from disputed area

Cambodia and Thailand have withdrawn troops from the disputed border to comply with the ruling of the International Court of Justice.

Nearly 500 Cambodian and some Thai troops withdrew from a demilitarized zone near the ancient Preah Vihear temple, which a court ruled belonged to Cambodia in 1962. Thailand accepts that the temple belongs to Cambodia, but the two countries dispute the land around it, a dispute that has led to several armed clashes in recent years.

Last year, the court responded to a Cambodian request by ordering both sides to withdraw troops completely and simultaneously from the 17.3-square-meter demilitarized zone around the Preah Vihear temple.

Both countries will send police forces to the demilitarized zone.
