Venezuelan military ready to use weapons if necessary

Venezuela's military chief Vladimir Padrino Lopez said on Tuesday he was ready to use force if necessary amid the coup attempt.

"Those who come to Miraflores (the presidential palace) because of violence will be defeated with violence. If we need to use weapons, we will apply it," he said on the country's state television, the Nacional news portal reported.

On Tuesday morning, Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, who declared himself president, and his supporters gathered in Caracas on the highway in front of the Carlota military base.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro says the armed forces remain loyal to the country's government.

According to the Russian Embassy in Caracas, after the attempted coup, the situation in the city remained calm, the military did not go over to the opposition and the situation was completely under control by the authorities.
