Russia-US relations remind Swedish media of World War I
The Swedish newspaper Expressen compared the current situation in relations between Russia and the West with the years before World War I.
"Nowadays, we often think that the Cold War will return. But if it does, it will still be good. In many ways, the current world situation is much more dangerous" — writes author Mats Larsson.
According to him, the ideological conflict that caused the Cold War was exhausted after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
"There is no longer a major confrontation between ideologies. What is happening now reminds the world not of the 1960s, but of the 1910s," — said Mats Larsson.
From the author's point of view, we have returned to the time when the actions of countries depended mainly on their national interests, as they engaged in conflicts for geopolitical reasons.
"There is no one left alive who has any memory of the conflict, or how it began. Let's hope that (countries) do not 'fall asleep at the wheel' again," Mats Larsson concluded.
