UN observers withdraw from Syria
The mandate of the UN mission to Syria should shift to pursuing a political solution for the Middle Eastern country.
On July 21, part of the United Nations mission left Syria, leaving only a small group of unarmed observers to continue their mission for another 30 days according to the Resolution just passed by the United Nations Security Council.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that instead of monitoring the ceasefire agreement, which has not been fully implemented in recent times, the mission of the UN mission to Syria should shift to pursuing a political solution for this Middle Eastern country.
UN observers in Syria
Diplomats said that to do this, only half of the 300 unarmed UN observers deployed in Syria recently would be needed. Therefore, the UN mission has allowed some observers to return home, but affirmed that it is ready to continue deploying the mission as soon as notified.
Meanwhile, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said violence across Syria on July 20 killed 240 people, including 43 soldiers.
The organization also said that the number of people killed in the past 48 hours has reached 550, making these the bloodiest two days in Syria in the 16 months since the outbreak of protests against President Assad./.
