Faced with the disaster of coal slag spilling down and burying many residential groups in Mong Duong ward (Cam Pha city), paralyzing the power system, Quang Ninh has mobilized many forces and made efforts to overcome the situation.
After the recent historic flood, Dam 790 became the most vulnerable point, with the highest risk of insecurity in Cam Pha City. The large amount of water flowing from upstream caused landslides, surface displacement and risk of collapse. |
A part of the dam was torn apart by the flood. Authorities said that if the 790 dam broke, it would drag down rocks and level residential areas and paralyze the entire operation of the 110KV and 35KV power stations in Mong Duong ward, threatening the Mong Duong coal mine. |
The coal slag dump of Cao Son Coal Joint Stock Company and Coc 6 Coal Joint Stock Company is located inside dam 790. On the night of July 26, the dam broke, causing a large amount of coal slag sludge from a height of about 100 m to spill down below. |
Located right at the foot of the dam, Mong Duong Coal Company and Company 790 suffered heavy damage. Rainwater carried mud and flooded down, wiping out one of Company 790's mine doors. |
Slag overflowed to the foot of the dam, causing mud and water to overflow, raising the ground level by 3-4 meters in many places. |
A house in group 1, zone 4, Mong Duong ward located at the foot of the dam was completely covered with coal slag on the first floor. Luckily, when the dam broke, the people escaped in time so there were no casualties. |
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang's house in group 1 was buried on the first floor. 7 months pregnant, when the coal slag mud flooded, Ms. Hang was so scared that she could not walk. Her husband and 3 neighbors had to carry her and run. Currently, her family and nearly 100 other households in groups 1 and 2, zone 4 have to take shelter at the ward health station and relatives' houses. |
To prevent the risk of the 790 dam collapsing, Mr. Dang Huy Hau, Vice Chairman of Quang Ninh Province, said that the province has coordinated with the Coal and Minerals Group to find ways to save this dam. The method is to adjust the flow to avoid the pressure of water and mud collapsing the dam body below, and at the same time use excavators to dump soil, reinforce and raise the dam surface. |
Hundreds of soldiers and police were mobilized to shovel sand into sacks to build a dike to prevent mud from overflowing into the power station area and residential area in Mong Duong ward. |
These artificial dikes will help prevent mud from flooding into homes. |
At the medical station of Mong Duong ward, there are hundreds of people staying, food, electricity and water are fully guaranteed. Mr. Pham Ngoc Lu, Vice Chairman of Mong Duong Ward People's Committee said, due to the continued rain, to avoid the risk of the coal slag dump continuing to burst, all households in groups 3 and 4, area 4 continue to be evacuated. |
