(Baonghean) -Some families in Que Phong district (Nghe An) have built multi-storey houses and bought cars thanks to breeding porcupines. Kim Son town has more than 30 households raising porcupines, block 8 has 9 households, block 9 has 8 households raising porcupines. The porcupine raising movement has strongly developed in Chau Kim and Tri Le communes.

Mr. Luong Sy Cuong's family (Block 8, Kim Son Town) started raising porcupines in 2004. At first, he raised a pair along with some other animals. Each year, his porcupine pair reproduced twice, and gradually he increased the number of porcupines to 10. It was also fate and business luck that customers came to order porcupines continuously. Last year, the price of a pair of porcupines peaked at 18 million VND/pair, and since the beginning of the year, the price has dropped but is still 15 million VND/pair. Since the beginning of the year, his family has sold 6 pairs, earning nearly 100 million VND. Knowing that porcupine breeding brings high economic efficiency, on an area of only 200 m2In front of the house, he invested in building a closed, standard barn system to ensure environmental and safety issues. According to Mr. Cuong, raising porcupines is quite simple because the barn area is not large, the food is quite simple, vegetables and fruits are easy to find, cheap to buy, and most importantly, porcupines are very disease-free. Having good results, Mr. Cuong supported Mr. Lo Van Thang's family, Do village, Chau Kim commune, to borrow a pair in advance to raise. After more than 1 year, Mr. Thang's family's porcupine pair reproduced, not only having enough money to pay Mr. Cuong but also escaping poverty.

However, according to porcupine farmers, the most difficult thing is to distinguish between males and females. Many households have been lucky because the pairs of porcupines they raise are both male and female and reproduce regularly. There are households that also raise porcupines but do not give birth, so they have to sell porcupines for meat, so they do not make a profit. In Kim Son town, there are 5 households raising as many as Mr. Luong Sy Cuong, the household with the most is considered the "king" of Que Phong porcupines, Mr. Lang Van Xuyen. Mr. Xuyen's family has more than 50 porcupines, but 30 of them give birth. Last year, Mr. Xuyen sold 60 pairs, earning more than 1 billion VND. Kim Son town has more than 30 households raising porcupines, K8 has 9 households, K9 has 8 households raising porcupines. The porcupine raising movement has strongly developed in both Chau Kim and Tri Le communes.

However, according to people who breed porcupines for breeding, there is currently no solution to distinguish between males and females, and more importantly, in the near future, porcupine breeding will be saturated, while raising porcupines for meat will bring much lower profits. Therefore, people also need to be careful when choosing to invest in this model, to avoid chasing after it without reaching the destination.
