(Baonghean.vn) - Australian government lawmakers have chosen a new speaker to represent the House of Representatives, after the previous speaker resigned due to a spending scandal that damaged the image of Prime Minister Tony Abbott's conservative government.

In a sign that new spokesman Tony Smith wants to maintain a more independent role than his predecessor Bronwyn Bishop, he said on 10 August that he would not attend party meetings where government policy and legislation are discussed.

Bishop resigned last week in the face of strong criticism after it emerged that in late July she spent more than $3,700 to hire a helicopter for a 50-mile trip to a golf course to attend a fundraising gala.

Bishop was handpicked by Tony Abbott, but the prime minister has allowed his party to decide on her replacement.
