Quoc Vuong, Hoang Thinh and the question: Central midfielder - who are you?

(Baonghean.vn) - SLNA through the ages has had many versatile players and excellent wingers, but for some reason, there are very few truly outstanding defensive midfielders like Quoc Vuong or Hoang Thinh.

Over the past few seasons, SLNA has been a team with a "lucky hand" in signing contracts with many "rough diamonds" in all lines, forming a stable and strong link, creating a solid backbone in the team's operations.

But then, due to not meeting the financial requirements, these foreign players moved to other teams, where there were not only 3 foreign player slots but also naturalized foreign player slots. Most of the teams that were already strong became stronger when they evenly distributed foreign player positions, especially a midfielder who could sweep, block the defense and attack with vigor, like Hanoi Club last season with Moses Oloya for example?

After acquiring the brave Iddi Batambatze in the midfield, SLNA was mostly interested in signing a contract with a central defender and two foreign strikers, the more “rough” the better, playing and maturing at the same time (next season, other teams often “snatch” them up quickly!). The heavy midfield, therefore, still had to “contract” to domestic players, when needed, “shout” to the foreign striker to drop back to support like Michel Olaha often played in recent seasons.

Meanwhile, as a famous training center, "knowing when to dry up" talent, SLNA still regularly "manufactures" steel defenders, talented midfielders and especially the top strikers of Vietnamese football. SLNA through the ages has had many versatile players, excellent wingers, but I don't understand why there are so few truly outstanding midfielders like Quoc Vuong or Hoang Thinh for example?

During the glorious, peak period of Quoc Vuong, it can be seen that this player played all over the field, was present at every hot spot at the right time, intercepted appropriately and launched attacks “well in every way”. The writer still remembers the praise of SLNA players in a match at Vinh Stadium during the “hot” period: “Mr. Vuong ran as fast as…two Westerners, flying in unison”!

That explains an old story that when Trong Hoang was still playing at Vinh Stadium, this player was often arranged in many "roles" depending on the actual force and opponent! Or like now, people have also talked about the possibility of pulling Xuan Manh from winger to defensive midfielder, not to mention in the U23 Vietnam squad, there were times when he had to defend, Mr. Park Hang-seo also put this midfielder to play... center back!

In reality, in a football team, not everyone needs to be "versatile", but perhaps just a few people are enough, the rest must be "professional" in each position. Only then will there be "peak", there will be depth. Or through the practice of competition, in the tactical eyes of each coach, will come to choosing "him" to play in which position to best promote the ability and strengths for the team. The story of Trong Hoang being "stationed" in the right-back position of the national team for a long time is a clear example.

With the position of SLNA's midfielder, it is clear that if we cannot train him, or have to wait, then there is no other way but to have money, sign a contract with a foreign player and accept the "vacancy" of a certain foreign position, depending on the current domestic force to calculate.

It is easy to see that through the two recent opening matches, the foreign strikers could not "suppress" the opponent's defense, the midfield lacked strength and experience, so SLNA was extremely passive and confused. This only made fans miss Quoc Vuong, Hoang Thinh or long for a strong foreign midfielder position to help the satellites control the central area, keep the goal still before opening possible breakthroughs.

Is that impossible now? Is the unanswered question: the midfielder - who is he?
