Quy Chau: 12 people died from wild bee attacks
(Baonghean.vn) -According to Quy Chau Hospital, among the causes of accidents or deaths in Quy Chau in 2012, a notable phenomenon was the number of victims dying from bee stings that increased dramatically compared to before.
Specifically, in November 2012, 14 people were hospitalized due to insect stings (specifically bee stings), but only 2 people recovered. The rest were treated at the district hospital, and some were transferred to a higher-level hospital, but all later died.
The victims were mostly from Chau Thang and Chau Hoi communes. According to custom, in winter, people often go into the forest to burn or chase bees to collect pupae to eat, but due to subjectivity and lack of protective equipment (thick clothes and helmets to cover the face and head), when the nest is destroyed, wild bees, especially hornets and ground bees (local people call them "buffalo bees", a type of wild bee with very poisonous venom) become aggressive and attack people....
Victims are often attacked by bees in the head and face, and a normal person only needs to be stung by 5 bees to be in critical condition. Common symptoms after being stung by this type of bee are similar to those of a patient suffering from drug shock (anaphylactic shock) and an allergic victim, with the whole body turning purple, cardiovascular collapse, liver failure, kidney failure, jaundice...
According to doctors at Quy Chau District Hospital, if a victim is stung by a bee and given emergency treatment and anti-venom early, he or she can survive. However, due to complacency and late transfer to the hospital, the victim is in critical condition and has suffered complications leading to a high risk of death. Therefore, doctors recommend that when someone is attacked by a wild bee, relatives should not be complacent and must immediately transfer to the nearest medical facility for anti-venom and emergency treatment.
