Quy Hop builds a closed orange production process
(Baonghean.vn) - Implementing the resolution of the District Party Congress for the 2015-2020 term, the People's Committee of Quy Hop district has chosen orange trees as a breakthrough in agricultural development. On that basis, the People's Committee of the district has built the Project "Developing Quy Hop orange material areas towards commodity production in the period 2015-2020".
In 2007, Quy Hop oranges were granted geographical indication protection by the Department of Intellectual Property - Ministry of Science and Technology. However, orange production is still fragmented, small-scale and spontaneous; the quality of the variety is not guaranteed, so the product quality is not high; In addition, the market is unstable, so Quy Hop oranges are mixed with other oranges, so they cannot meet the market demand...

Faced with that reality, Quy Hop district issued the Project "Developing Quy Hop orange material area towards commodity production in the period of 2015 - 2020". Accordingly, the project's goal is to exploit the maximum potential of land, climate, soil, human resources, facilities, and technical infrastructure to develop orange areas. The project is implemented in 6 communes, including: Minh Hop, Nghia Xuan, Chau Dinh, Van Loi, Ha Son and Tam Hop. These are localities located on fertile basalt red soil with a tradition of growing orange trees. Currently, people in these communes are very active in switching to orange growing to improve their families' economic efficiency.
The total cost of the project is estimated at about 650 billion VND, allocated from capital sources from the budget, enterprises, foreign investment capital and mobilized from the people. Of which, it is expected to mobilize socialization from the people at about 46.2%, equivalent to 300 billion VND. The project aims at a closed orange production process from seed selection to product processing and bringing to market.

Some key solutions proposed by the district are to build a high-tech orange production area at Xuan Thanh Agricultural One Member Co., Ltd. with a scale of 10 hectares for orange seed production; Focus on training technical staff and providing technical training for farmers; Innovate and develop cooperative economy and cooperatives on the basis of voluntary association and cooperation between households and farms; Encourage the development of household economy and economic sectors in investing in orange tree development...
Mr. Hoang Van Thai - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quy Hop said: "The whole district has a total of 2,045 hectares of oranges and tangerines, especially Quy Hop oranges which have high economic value, with some households earning more than 4 billion VND/year. Quy Hop has red basalt soil concentrated in the communes of Minh Hop, Nghia Xuan Van Loi, Ha Son, Tam Hop and Chau Dinh, which are favorable conditions for developing orange trees. In addition, Quy Hop oranges have a nationwide brand, especially the Vinh orange brand.

However, the implementation of this project also encountered many difficulties, that is, in Quy Hop, only 750 hectares have entered the business, the output will increase in the near future, forecasted to be more than 2,000 hectares but there is no stable output, mainly due to small traders purchasing. People want to have a fruit processing factory located in Quy Hop. Currently, the district is building a project for Quy Hop raw oranges and requesting functional sectors to invest funds to plan orange growing areas and research soil qualities so that orange trees can grow more and more.
In early May 2016, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam inspected the concentrated orange growing area in Minh Hop commune, Quy Hop district, hoping that in the near future, the Quy Hop orange growing area will build its own brand, increasing the value of Quy Hop orange products on the market.
