In the first quarter of 2024, 275,130 cases of alcohol concentration violations will be handled.
According to the Traffic Police Department, in the first quarter of 2024, the national Traffic Police force handled more than 1.03 million cases of traffic order and safety violations, and imposed fines of nearly VND 2,041.5 billion. Compared to the same period in 2023, the number of handled cases and fines both increased.
In the field of road traffic, the Traffic Police force has handled over 1.02 million cases, fined nearly 2,019.5 billion VND. Of which, there were 275,130 cases of alcohol concentration violations (accounting for 26.8%); 1,587 cases of drivers testing positive for drugs (accounting for 0.15%); 21,740 cases of overloading (accounting for 2.1%); 245,707 cases of speeding violations (accounting for 24%).
In the railway traffic sector, 267 cases were handled, with fines of 142 million VND. In the waterway traffic sector, 10,479 cases were handled, with fines of 21 billion 841 million VND.
Regarding traffic accidents, in the first quarter of 2024, there were 6,550 accidents nationwide, killing 2,723 people and injuring 5,246 people. Compared to the same period in 2023, the number of deaths due to traffic accidents decreased by 484 people (15.1%).
The Traffic Police Department also said that traffic accidents were mainly concentrated in the road traffic sector with 6,496 cases, killing 2,686 people and injuring 5,239 people. Compared to the same period in 2023, the number of deaths due totraffic accidentdecreased by 490 people (15.43%). There were 40 incidents in the railway transport sector, and 14 incidents on inland waterways.
Notably, in the first 3 months of the year, there were 6 traffic accidents with particularly serious consequences, occurring in Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Tra Vinh, Lao Cai, Thua Thien - Hue, and Tuyen Quang.
Traffic accidents with particularly serious consequences have decreased in all three criteria compared to the same period in 2023. Specifically, there were 5 fewer cases, 20 fewer deaths, and 28 fewer injuries. Through analysis, the vehicles causing the most traffic accidents were motorbikes, accounting for 56.82%, trucks, and trailers ranked second with 19.4%, followed by cars, passenger cars, etc.
"The cause of most traffic accidents is due to drivers not paying attention, not driving in the correct lane, not changing direction properly, not keeping a safe distance, and drinking alcohol," a representative of the Traffic Police Department analyzed.
In 2024, the national Traffic Police force will focus on handling 5 groups of violations that are the main causes of traffic accidents, including: alcohol and drug concentrations; oversized, overloaded, extending the vehicle's body, carrying too many people, expired inspection, expired vehicles, stopping to pick up and drop off passengers in the wrong place; speeding; violations of overtaking, road sections, lanes, not obeying traffic light signals, and using documents not issued by competent authorities (fake documents) related to the driver and vehicle.
The handling is thorough, with no forbidden areas or exceptions, focusing on groups of behaviors that cause traffic accidents. The goal is to gradually form a culture when participating in traffic and curb traffic accidents.
