Copyright in Vietnam is being seriously violated.
The copyright sector in Vietnam is facing many forms of copyright infringement despite the existence of legal documents on intellectual property and Vietnam's participation in most important international treaties on copyright.
Copyright infringement causes great damage.
That is the affirmation of artist and poet Doan Thi Lam Luyen - Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Copyright Association at the Workshop: "Right to copy works and the role of collective management" held on December 13 in Hanoi.
Copyright infringement is becoming increasingly rampant, causing serious damage not only to the economic value but also to the spirit of the creator of the work. Common infringements such as photocopying (copying by photocopy machine) for internal use or copying by digital technology and using unauthorized works on the Internet are a major challenge for the whole society.

Speaking at the workshop, Ms. Doan Thi Lam Luyen affirmed: “The direct negative impact of illegal copying activities is the loss of important income that authors and publishers should have received according to the law. This is especially disadvantageous for countries that use languages that are not common in the world like Vietnam, because the domestic market is almost the only place for creators and publishers to generate income.
Piracy also creates a major barrier for foreign organizations and individuals, making them hesitant to invest in bringing works to Vietnam. This directly affects the public in our country because they will lose the opportunity to access and learn about the works of famous people in the world.
Affirming that this is a "problem" that needs to be prevented and ended, the Workshop received many contributions from everyone in finding appropriate solutions.
Big challenges for copyright organizations and associations
Present at the workshop, intellectual property expert, Mr. Bui Nguyen Hung - Deputy Director of the Copyright Department, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism answered everyone's questions about copyright protection and international treaties that Vietnam has participated in. On the Vietnamese side, he said: "Regarding copyright protection, currently in our country there is the Center for Music Copyright Protection (established in 2002); Vietnam Recording Industry Association (established in 2003); Vietnam Literary Copyright Center (established in 2004) and Vietnam Reproduction Rights Association (Vietrro, established in 2010) with the function and task of protecting the rights of creators of works and exploiting the economic value from those works".
Regarding Vietrro's activities, Ms. Doan Thi Lam Luyen emphasized: "The Association will act as an intermediary in connecting and providing works to users in a legal manner and ensuring the rights of both parties. Accordingly, the person holding the copy rights (author, publisher) will entrust this "brainchild" to Vietrro, Vietrro will license the user (school, agency, enterprise...), and at the same time will collect the remuneration that the user must pay, this amount will be compensated to the copyright holder".
After nearly 3 years of operation, Vietrro currently manages over 32,000 works and has become a member of the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organizations (IFRRO) since June 2011.
However, with the development of science and technology, especially digital technology and telecommunications, the scale of copying activities is increasingly increasing, so prevention is still a big challenge for the authorities. This requires the cooperation and contribution of not only the authorities but also the "fathers and mothers" in the awareness of protecting their "brainchild".
