Quynh Lien (Hoang Mai Town): Chayote price is 200 VND/kg
(Baonghean.vn)- Normally in previous years, during the Lunar New Year, due to reduced demand, chayote prices in Quynh Lien Commune, Hoang Mai Town often decreased. However, this year is the first year that chayote prices have reached a record low, making people very discouraged.
Our reporters have recorded some of the following images:

Every day, Quynh Lien commune has 10 trucks over 20 tons purchasing and transporting chayote to sell, but still can't keep up. |
Within 1 month before Tet and nearly 20 days after Tet, the price of chayote in the garden in Quynh Lien commune was only 200 VND/kg, much lower than previous years at only 500-600 VND/kg. According to some households, to cover expenses and have a little profit, the price of chayote must be at least 1,000 VND/kg. However, with such a price, instead of harvesting to sell, many households have no choice but to shake the chayote to let it fall to collect and cut it for cows and pigs to eat or even make green manure to fertilize plants for the next crop.

The reason for the record low price of chayote in Quynh Lien, in addition to the decrease in purchasing power in the large markets in the North and South due to workers returning home for Tet, is another reason: the "supply" of chayote is too much. According to the People's Committee of Quynh Lien commune, with the success of the previous years, this year people planted about 10 more hectares, bringing the total area of chayote in the commune to over 70 hectares. The characteristic of chayote is that if the weather conditions are good, it will grow very well, with a very high yield, averaging 6-8 tons/sao, equivalent to about 140-150 tons/ha. Because of the large planting area, Quynh Lien commune sends over 10 trucks a day, each truck carrying 20-30 tons to different places, but it is not enough, causing the amount of harvested chayote to remain very large.

Mr. Ho Van Duoc, hamlet 6, sadly used a hoe to bury chayote to make green manure. |
Contacting some purchasing agents, we learned that the import price of chayote in Hanoi is only 300-400 VND/kg, so we cannot buy more for people. Compared to previous years, there were times when the price of chayote reached 8,000 to 10,000 VND/kg, and during Tet this year, people suffered heavy losses. The purchasing agents hope that in the coming time, when people in large markets will gather, the price of chayote will gradually increase.

Almost every family that grows chayote in Quynh Lien cannot sell the fruit, leaving the fruit all over the garden. |
Mr. Nguyen Van Uoc in hamlet 5, whose family grows 5 sao of chayote, said: with prices like this, if the price of chayote does not increase in about a month, many households will suffer heavy losses. His family grows 5 sao, and luckily they were able to sell a few batches of fruit early, so they can barely cover the cost. However, based on the above situation, next year he will adjust to growing less chayote and replace it with some other suitable plants.
Through this incident, it shows that in the market mechanism, people must consider and calculate the arrangement of planting structure and area appropriately; at the same time, local authorities must also do a good job of planning, grasp market information to promptly advise and guide people; should not follow the trend massively, leading to inefficiency and lack of sustainability./.
