(Baonghean)The fishmeal factory of Long Hai private seafood processing enterprise has been located in Quynh Minh commune (Quynh Luu) for more than 10 years, with a production line with a capacity of 30 tons of fish/day, producing an average of 3,000 tons of fresh fish per year. In recent years, the factory's operations have caused serious environmental pollution.

Mr. Ho Nghia Dung - head of hamlet 2, Quynh Minh commune, was upset: “People in the hamlet always have to close their doors because of the stench caused by the fishmeal processing process. Especially on days with the Northeast wind, the stench of rotten fish is unbearable. Not only hamlet 2, people in the hamlets adjacent to the factory close their doors but the stench still wafts into their houses. In addition, to limit water from fish trucks flowing down the road, the locality has banned the factory's fish trucks from passing through.”

At meetings with voters, the people of Quynh Minh commune made recommendations and the authorities requested the factory to take measures to overcome, handle, and improve technology... to minimize environmental pollution. Talking to us, the owner of a private seafood processing enterprise Long Hai said: "To limit the stench, the initial solution of the enterprise is to choose fresh fish products, take a small amount of raw materials, take as much as you make, and not leave it in the warehouse for a long time. At the same time, the enterprise has invested in wet treatment equipment for coal dust to reduce the stench when drying fish. In the coming time, the company will invest in odor treatment equipment using a system of ponds to condense and absorb vapor, not letting the stench diffuse into the air as it does now, but the difficulty of the enterprise is that it does not have a site yet". Therefore, the people of hamlets 1, 2, and 3 of Quynh Minh commune still live with the stench every day.

In the mountainous commune of Ngoc Son, the fishmeal production facility of Ms. Tran Thi Huyen, although located hidden in the mountains, every time the factory dries fish, the stench affects hamlets 4A, 4B and hamlet 7 of Ngoc Son commune. People of Ngoc Son commune have sent their opinions to the authorities and requested the factory to take remedial measures. Although the factory has invested in upgrading industrial equipment to treat odors and the quality of waste discharge has improved, the situation is still not very positive.

Mr. Dau Duc Nam - Head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Quynh Luu district said: "There are currently 5 fishmeal processing factories in the district. The district is directing companies to quickly build wastewater treatment systems, use cold storage to preserve raw materials, prepare documents for wastewater discharge permits and plant trees to ensure the environment. At the same time, we will punish units that violate environmental criteria."
