Quynh Luu: Success from commercial snail farming model
(Baonghean.vn) - DWith the project's support of 50 million VND for seeds and food, Mr. Nguyen Van Son's family, in Tan Thinh village, An Hoa commune, boldly invested in building ponds, buying more cages and nets to test raising snails in cages.
With an initial pond area of 3,000 m2, he boldly bought more than 170 kg of seed. With guidance from the Quynh Luu District Science and Technology Council and the District Agricultural Extension Station on technical processes from pond renovation, cages, breed selection, care and especially pond management, the family has done well in increasing temperature measurement, feeding appropriately and cleaning nets and cages, so the snails grow and develop well. The weight of the snails when they were first raised was 190 - 200 snails/kg, now the weight of the snails is 130 - 150 snails/kg, according to the family's calculations after deducting expenses, the average income is estimated at about 50 million VND.
Farming snails in nets in An Hoa commune, Quynh Luu
Currently, the snail is a specialty with high economic value, favored by many consumers. In Quynh Luu, snail seeds have been produced for 4 to 5 years, however, the results of the experimental farming are still not high. With the view of rotating the subjects and overcoming some disadvantages and limitations of previous models, this year Quynh Luu district has implemented a pilot model of commercial snail farming in An Hoa commune by raising in cages.
The technical process of raising is very simple, each cage has an area of 1 - 4m2 and has a protective net outside, a water depth of 1.5m or more, at the bottom of the cage is a layer of sand for the snails to bury themselves. The stocking density is about 500 - 1,000 snails/m2. During the raising process, the amount of food must be adjusted appropriately, the cage and net must be checked regularly and cleaned.
Through effective testing, it is clear that the snails have grown and developed well and there are no signs of disease. Mr. Nguyen Anh Hung - Head of the Agricultural and Fisheries Extension Station of Quynh Luu district assessed: "After more than 1 month of raising, the snails have increased in weight from 200/kg to 150/kg, the weight gain coefficient reached 1.33 times, through testing, there have been no signs of disease, the survival rate is high. I think this is a new direction that needs to be summarized and drawn from experience".
With the initial effectiveness of the commercial snail farming model, in the coming time, Quynh Luu district will continue to expand this model throughout the area, in order to replace ineffective livestock. Thereby contributing to helping people increase income and improve their lives.
