Quynh Luu: Application of science and technology in aquaculture

(Baonghean) - Quynh Luu is a district with strengths in aquaculture development. In recent years, many localities in the district have actively applied science and technology in aquaculture, bringing high economic efficiency to the people.

Quynh Luu is a locality with a large aquaculture area in the province with more than 800 hectares of shrimp farming and 104 hectares of clam farming. Up to now, the whole district has created large-scale concentrated industrial shrimp farming areas in Quynh Bang, Quynh Minh, Quynh Thanh, An Hoa communes... To achieve high efficiency in aquaculture, people apply scientific and technological advances such as farming in canvas houses, using microorganisms, water fans, canvas covers, aeration with modern equipment... From there, contributing to increasing productivity and output, which can reach 20 - 30 tons/ha/crop.

Mr. Nguyen Van Son, An Hoa commune (Quynh Luu) is happy about the shrimp season.

Visiting the family of Mr. Nguyen Van Son, in Tan Thinh village, An Hoa commune (Quynh Luu) - one of the households with the largest aquaculture area in the commune, with nearly 4 hectares, of which 2 hectares are intensive shrimp farming, the remaining nearly 2 hectares are crab, crab and fish farming. Mr. Son said that after more than 10 years of bidding for land to convert into aquaculture ponds, up to now, the family has 4 ponds for raising white-leg shrimp, each pond harvests an average of 2.5 - 3 tons of shrimp, sold at 160 - 170 thousand VND/kg, bringing in an annual net profit of 700 - 800 million VND. This result is thanks to proactively learning and drawing valuable experiences in techniques for improving the pond environment, eliminating weeds, disinfecting water, and coloring the water before releasing shrimp with a strict process. “In both recent shrimp farming seasons, my family had a higher income than the surrounding shrimp farming households… Shrimp farmers must understand science and technology, such as knowing how to monitor and check whether shrimp grow fast or slow to have timely treatment measures. And especially monitoring to prevent diseases, then the probability of success will be high” - Mr. Son shared. In addition, Mr. Son also applied his accumulated experience to check the growth of shrimp. According to him, during the shrimp farming process, about every 3-5 days, he used a net to pull the shrimp up once to monitor their growth. If the shrimp grow slowly and are already at 70-80 shrimp/kg, then sell them; if the newly released shrimp grow slowly, there must be measures to increase their growth.

Not only industrial shrimp farming, people in some communes such as Quynh Bang, Quynh Thanh, Quynh Minh, Son Hai... also promote their own natural conditions to develop commercial clam farming. Mr. Thai Ba Khang in Son Hai commune is one of the successful households in the clam farming model. He said that when he started raising clams, he only had 3 hectares, but now the farming area has been expanded to 30 hectares. Thanks to proper care according to technical processes, the clam fields have developed stably, reaching an average yield of 30 tons/ha. The price of commercial clams has reached 24,000 VND/kg in some years. In 2014 alone, Mr. Khang's revenue from clams reached over 12 billion VND. To successfully raise clams, one must "stick" to science and technology. Before releasing clam seeds, it is necessary to clean the ground; choose clam seeds with a reliable "address": the clam release ground must be flat, with sandy soil or muddy sand, regular tides, choose high tides, calm winds; Avoid releasing clams during rainy months like September - October.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dinh - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quynh Luu district said: To increase productivity and output for the aquaculture industry, the locality is currently directing localities to promote the application of science and technology on new scientific and technological processes, biological products in livestock farming, using tarpaulins in shrimp farming to prevent cold, feeding machines... In particular, the district is promoting the use of salt water from the sea to the farming areas in Quynh Bang commune to avoid pollution during the discharge process; expanding the farming area according to VietGAP standards; applying scientific and technological advances to the production of shrimp, crabs and crabs on a small-scale farm to diversify livestock".
