Quynh Luu: Entering the new shrimp season

March 10, 2012 15:52

(Baonghean) According to the agricultural sector's seasonal schedule, from March 20, 2012, Quynh Luu started releasing shrimp seeds for the first crop. Currently, all preparations regarding seed sources, pond renovation... are ready to enter the new shrimp release season.

As the weather has warmed up, the 8,000 m2 shrimp pond of Ms. Dinh Thi Hai's family - Hong Phong hamlet (An Hoa commune) is being renovated, preparing for the new shrimp farming season. Ms. Hai said: Her family has 2.5 hectares of shrimp farming, right after Tet, they hired more than a dozen workers, focusing on renovating the pond so that they can release shrimp on schedule. This year, because of the April leap, the shrimp farming season is also "more leisurely".

Although not a key area of the district, shrimp is still the main economic development spearhead of An Hoa commune. In 2011, the whole commune had 36 hectares of shrimp, earning approximately 28 billion VND. This year's shrimp crop, An Hoa transferred 3 hectares of ineffective salt production in Tan Thinh hamlet to shrimp farming, bringing the total shrimp pond area in the whole commune to 39 hectares. Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee - Mr. Le Van Quyet said: Every year, shrimp are released from the second lunar month, but this year, due to the April leap, the season is about a month later.

People in An Hoa commune focus on renovating ponds for shrimp farming.

Learning from last year's experience, some households released shrimp too early, and when it rained and was cold, the shrimp could not grow and were very sick. This year's shrimp crop, the commune focused on directing and propagating to people to wait for warm weather before releasing shrimp. Since January, people have focused on renovating ponds, drying lakes, and treating pathogens. Up to now, about 24 hectares, equivalent to 80% of the pond area, have been renovated, and are preparing to get water and treat the color for releasing shrimp. Currently, the biggest concern for both people and the government is the source of shrimp seeds.

In Quynh Luu district, there are currently 17 shrimp seed production facilities, mainly black tiger shrimp. In recent years, most shrimp farmers have switched to raising white-leg shrimp, but these facilities still do not have enough resources and techniques to produce this shrimp seed. Therefore, the source of shrimp seed is still completely dependent on large companies such as CP Vietnam Livestock Breeding Joint Stock Company, Viet Uc Company Limited, and recently Vina.

Mr. Hoang Ngoc Thuy - Officer of the district's Agriculture Department said: This year's shrimp crop, the source of shrimp seeds is expected to be more secure than in 2011. In addition to the Animal Feed Seed Joint Stock Company that has committed to produce and supply about 1 billion shrimp seeds, this year the district has a support mechanism, has enough seed sources to serve the people, and encourages other units to invest in and produce shrimp seeds. The scale of seed supply of the units has been expanded, such as Vina Company has signed a contract to bring shrimp seeds to 3 seed production facilities in the area, an increase of 2 facilities compared to 2011, Viet Uc Company Limited also committed to increase the production and supply of seeds. Currently, the whole district has 6 facilities that both produce black tiger shrimp seeds and have contracts to receive larvae for larval rearing and breeding. In the long term, the district has granted Viet Uc Company Limited 4 hectares in Quynh Minh to build a seed farm...

In order to prevent the risk of disease outbreaks in shrimp, the district coordinated with the Department of Animal Health and the Department of Aquatic Resources Protection to inspect the veterinary conditions and production and business conditions of aquatic seed production facilities, in order to strictly manage the quality of shrimp seeds produced and circulated in the area from input to output. When facilities take shrimp for breeding as well as when selling, they are required to take samples for quarantine of white spot virus in order to immediately destroy diseased shrimp, preventing the risk of disease spreading.

Through inspection, the inspection force discovered that 7/76 imported parent tiger shrimp were infected with white spot virus and were destroyed. To have a successful shrimp crop, the district recommends that farmers strictly follow the seed release schedule and do a good job of environmental sanitation to minimize adverse impacts. Release shrimp according to the season schedule, do not release too early because it will be cold and do not release too late because it will often rain at the end of the season, the water will be diluted, affecting the growth and development of shrimp. The district also recommends that shrimp farmers should register early so that seed suppliers can have specific contracts with seed production companies on the quantity and specific time of supply, so that they can proactively release shrimp seeds.
