(Baonghean.vn) - Hanh Phuc is a large canal flowing through 4 communes including: Hung Thong, Hung Thang, Hung Phuc and Hung Chau of Hung Nguyen district, providing irrigation water and some daily activities for the communes here. However, currently, the Hanh Phuc canal section through Hung Chau commune is polluted due to the indiscriminate littering of the people.
The two banks of the canal are currently seriously polluted, with piles of rubbish dumped by careless people along the canal, and decomposed animal carcasses causing a foul smell. All kinds of rubbish, from household waste to agricultural products, are contained in plastic bags and large sacks and thrown around. It is worth mentioning that right next to the canal is the inter-commune road of Hung Nguyen district. Many people passing by here have to cover their noses and speed through these roads because of the stench from the garbage piles along the roadside and the stench of the water.
Many sections of the canal have turned murky, with floating scum covering the canal bed. The stench of garbage is so strong that it wafts deep into the village, seriously affecting the environment and people's health. Mr. Dong, a resident living nearby, said: "The pollution around this canal has been going on for many years now. Many days, especially in the summer, the stench of garbage is carried by the wind, forcing my house to be closed at all times." Many people have fallen ill because of the "foul smell" coming from the river. More dangerously, more than two thousand students and teachers of Hung Chau Primary School and Hung Chau Secondary School study close to the canal and piles of garbage every day. Therefore, the impact on the health of the students is inevitable.
The landfill is next to the Hanh Phuc canal, near two primary and secondary schools in Hung Chau commune.
Ms. Loan, a resident at Hung Chau intersection, said indignantly, "The canal water is so dirty that we don't dare use well water anymore and have to use rainwater for fear that the canal water will mix with the well water."
Talking to us, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Quyen - Chairman of Hung Chau Commune People's Committee said: In recent years, the commune has built two projects on waste issues; The first project was to build a centralized landfill, but only 3 hamlets implemented it while the remaining 7 hamlets did not agree because the landfill was close to the residential area, causing a foul smell, and if it was moved far away from the residential area, the commune would not have land. Then, in 2009, a project to treat the environment at home was proposed with 50% financial support from the commune, but it was only implemented for a short time because when burning, the smoke from the garbage rose up and was equally toxic. Currently, a project to hire trucks to transport garbage to the centralized landfill has been proposed, but it is only on paper.
While the authorities have not yet come up with a solution, people continue to throw garbage into the canal. The current situation of “no one cries for public property” has made the water source and environment around the Hanh Phuc canal no longer live up to its name.
