The humanoid robot Atlas demonstrated its ability to run like a human in a video shared by US robot manufacturer Boston Dynamics on YouTube on May 10, attracting more than 2.9 million views, according toLive Science. The robot strode across the lawn, not far from a clump of trees and sparse houses. The whirring and clicking of Atlas's motors, gears, and joints echoed in the quiet surroundings.
The robot, described as “the world’s most agile humanoid robot,” ran at a slow, steady pace across a gentle slope into another field, then stopped in front of a log. Atlas stood firm, bent his knees, raised his arms, and quickly slid over the obstacle, landing without wobbling. It was an impressive display of human-like movement.
This isn’t the first time Atlas has gone viral. In a YouTube video posted on February 23, 2016, the robot can be seen walking through a snow-covered forest, stacking boxes on shelves, and regaining its balance after a Boston Dynamics employee nudges it with a hockey stick.
The latest video, however, marks the first time Atlas has run freely outdoors, a test of the robot’s balance and orientation in a natural setting rather than on a warehouse floor. Atlas’s sensors allow it to move smoothly over rough terrain and quickly get back up when it falls, according to Boston Dynamics.
