For a long time, sleep disorders have become a fairly common phenomenon in modern society and have many negative consequences for human health.

However, a recent study by scientists at the University of Iceland also shows that sleep-related problems can lead to an increased risk of prostate cancer in men.

According to a study published in the American journal "Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention" on May 7, men who have sleep-related problems such as difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep are twice as likely to develop prostate cancer as others.

To come to the above conclusion, the group of authors conducted a survey on the sleep quality of 2,100 men in Iceland aged 67-96.

Of these, 14.4% had severe or extremely severe sleep problems. After 5 years of follow-up, scientists found that 6.4% of those with sleep disorders were diagnosed with prostate cancer. If age-related variables were excluded, those with difficulty falling asleep were 1.6 times more likely to develop prostate cancer than those with normal sleep. This rate was 2.1 times higher for those who were awake.

Research team leader Lara G. Sigurdardottir expressed hope that, if the above research is verified, improving sleep will be one of the solutions to help reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

According to Ms. Sigurdardottir, very few people previously knew about the link between sleep disorders and prostate cancer in men, even though many studies have shown that sleep disorders can increase the risk of breast cancer in women./.
