Goodbye Roger Federer |
Philippe Chatrier Court, with a capacity of nearly 15,000 seats, was completely full yesterday. People came not only to witness the match between Ernests Gulbis and the legendary Roger Federer, but also to admire a fading star.
Federer's loss was no longer a shock. As he ages, his form declines. But the match with Gulbis may have marked an unhappy turning point in Federer's career, as it was the first time in 10 years that he had been eliminated before the quarter-finals of Roland Garros.
In this match, Federer's backhands were less error-prone, but the sharpness of the shots that were once considered the Express Train's forte was no longer there. Meanwhile, Gulbis chose the tactic of destroying Federer's stamina with drop shots and then lobs very successfully. In the 5th set, Gulbis's long shots and sudden drop shots made Federer unable to move and the 17-time Grand Slam winner had to give up his racket. Losing 6-7, 7-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to the player 7 years younger than him, Federer was the brightest star to have to pack his bags and go home in the men's singles.
The next match between Verdasco and Gasquet (postponed due to rain) had no surprises. Verdasco went on to win 6-3 and the score was 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. Andy Murray's victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber in the next match was similar.
In another match, Milos Raonic easily defeated Marcel Granollers in just 3 sets with the same score of 6-3. Meanwhile, the most anticipated match of round 4 between Tsonga and Djokovic was not as exciting as expected. Novak Djokovic easily defeated Tsonga in 3 sets with a very strong score of 6-1, 6-4, 6-1. Tsonga could not show much against Djokovic's "oppressive" style of play (met Raonic in the quarterfinals). Thus, in the men's singles, the home team only has Monfils left.
Andy Murray had a tough match against Kohlschreiber. The two players had been tied 2-2 and had to go into the fifth set with a two-set difference to advance.
The match was tied 7-7 in the fifth set when it was postponed. When it was replayed, Murray had to wait until the 12th game to win.
In the women's singles, Maria Sharapova continued to win with her extremely fast playing style, pressuring her opponent. Masha's opponent, Samantha Stosur, although quite physically fit, could not withstand the high intensity and lost 0-6 in the 3rd set (6-3, 4-6, 6-0).
Another very good player, Angelique Kerber, also had to say goodbye after losing quickly 1-6, 2-6 to Eugenie Bouchard.
