The US UL laboratory, which specializes in safety testing, has just tested the safety of fake chargers purchased online. The results show that out of 400 fake Apple chargers, 397 chargers do not ensure basic electrical safety.

This rate is equivalent to over 99%. More seriously, 3 of these chargers caused fire and electric leakage, 12 chargers were designed very poorly, causing the risk of fatal electric shock.

Meanwhile, the UK's Trading Standards agency also tested "second-hand" chargers purchased in London. Of the 3,000 chargers tested, 15% were found to be unsafe in various ways.

Although this figure is better than fake chargers bought online, 15% is still too high a number for the risk of fire and electric shock.

The only reason people don't buy genuine Apple chargers is because they're too expensive: $19 for the charger and $19 for the charging cable.
