Saposhnikovia divaricata - A medicinal herb that neutralizes heat and relieves depression
Bupleurum is also known as leaf safflower, bamboo leaf safflower, and northern safflower. Bupleurum is the root of the northern safflower plant (Bupleurum chinesnis DC).
In Vietnam, Safflower is the root of Pluchea pteropoda Hemsl., or the branches and roots of Pluchea indica Less. Care should be taken when using.
Safflower is considered the main ingredient in prescriptions and menus to balance and regulate the states of depression, agitation, fever, and prolonged pain, which in medicine is called "harmonizing and relieving heat, relieving depression, and relieving liver and liver depression". Safflower contains saponin compounds, essential oils, and flavonoids. According to Oriental medicine, Safflower is bitter and cool; it enters the liver, gallbladder, pericardium, and triple burner.
Has the effect of dispersing heat and relieving the exterior, clearing the liver, relieving pain, promoting yang energy and stopping malaria attacks. Used for cases of fever, malaria, flu (recurrent cold and heat), chest and abdominal pain, irregular menstruation, middle qi depression (all types of hernias, prolapse of the stomach, intestines, uterus, and abdomen), chronic hepatitis, and malaria attacks.

Saposhnikovia is used as medicine in the following cases:
Clear, pain-relieving
Liver and spleen tonic: 40g of bupleurum, 40g of angelica, 40g of white hairy root, 40g of dried grass, 40g of red peony root, 40g of earthworm, 40g of Chinese clematis root ...20g of tangerine peel, 30g of chicken gizzard lining, 70g of antler, 140g of dried pig liver.
Grind the ingredients into a fine powder, mix with honey to form pills. Take 2-3 times a day, 12g each time, with cooled boiled water. Treats chronic hepatitis, newly hardened liver, pain in the liver area, and bloating.
Note: pregnant women and people with esophageal varices should avoid using.
Modified Dai Sai Ho Decoction: Sai Ho 16g, Bach Thuoc 12g, Saussurea 6g, Uat Kim 12g, Dai Rhubarb 16g, Scutellaria baicalensis 12g. Decoct and drink. Treats acute cholecystitis and biliary tract infections.
Or: 12g of bupleurum, 12g of scutellaria baicalensis, 12g of coptis chinensis, 12g of magnolia bark, 20g of white peony root, 20g of areca nut, 30g of Chinese clematis root bark, 12g of pepper. Decoct and drink. Treats roundworms in the bile duct.
Heat dissipation, symptom relief
Small Safflower Decoction: 12g Safflower, 12g Scutellaria baicalensis, 12g Pinellia ternata, 4g Licorice, 8g Ginger, 12g Codonopsis pilosula, 3 jujubes. Decoct and drink. Treats yang deficiency, alternating fever and chills, fullness and distention in the chest and flanks, bitter mouth and dry throat, palpitations, nausea, loss of appetite; also used to treat malaria.
Bile, fever relief
Small Safflower Decoction (12g Safflower, 12g Scutellaria, 12g Pinellia, 4g Licorice, 8g Ginger, 12g Codonopsis, 3 Jujubes) add 12g Cardamom, 12g Chinese clematis. Decoct and drink. Severe malaria and fever.
Contraindications: People with yin deficiency and liver yang excess should avoid using.
