Salah scores again in Liverpool's win
The Anfield home team defeated Southampton 3-0 in round 6 of the Premier League on September 22.
Salah swooped in to score his third goal of the season. |
Goals: Hoedt 10' (own goal), Matip 21', Salah 45'+3
With a fierce spirit when entering the game, Liverpool took the lead in the 10th minute, although somewhat fortunately. Starting from a very strong cross from Xherdan Shaqiri on the left wing, the ball hit Shane Long and bounced to Wesley Hoedt. Surprised, the away team's defender fumbled and let the ball bounce into his own goal despite the efforts of goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
This was Shaqiri's first start for Liverpool. And he continued to make his mark. From a free kick in the first half's injury time, the Swiss star hit the crossbar and bounced out. In a flash, Mohamed Salah swooped in to score the rebound, making it 3-0. Before that, center-back Joel Matip scored Liverpool's second goal with a high header from Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner.
The three-goal lead made the game all but certain, with the second half seeing little action, save for Virgil van Dijk having to leave the pitch early with a suspected injury and Salah once again having the ball in the Southampton net but having it ruled out for offside.
Shaqiri did not score but was a big factor in Liverpool's victory in this match. |
Optimism is a constant at Liverpool. Otherwise, their fans would not have survived 28 years without a league title, despite once being the most successful team in England.
But perhaps, never before has optimism been as... realistic as it is now at Liverpool. From the elements in the defense, to the way of organizing attacks, scoring goals and "suffocating" the opponent. Perhaps, never before has it been as strong as it is now. This result helps Liverpool have the best start in the club's history, with a perfect start to the first seven matches of the season in all competitions.
On the two previous occasions Liverpool had won their first six league games, they were champions in 1978-79 and runners-up in 1990-91.
