Juan Santamaria Airport is located in San José, about 80 km from the eruption site. Authorities said that all flights were suspended to prevent possible incidents.
“All the airport runways are covered in ash. We will take the necessary measures to return the airport to operation as soon as possible,” said airport spokesman Juan Santamaria.

Previously, in mid-March 2015, Juan Santamaria Airport was also forced to close for two days due to the amount of ash emitted by the Turrialba volcano. The airport closure caused 110 flights to be canceled as well as stranding 7,000 passengers in the capital San José.
In October 2014, the Turrialba volcano, after 130 years of dormancy, began to show the first signs of awakening with lava and ash eruptions.
