Agricultural production growth to slow in the coming decade

June 11, 2013 21:30

Over the next decade, agricultural production will slow, largely due to slowing expansion of arable land, rising production costs, and environmental pressures.

This is the conclusion made by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in the report "Agricultural Outlook 2013 - 2022" released on June 6 in Beijing, China.

Global agricultural production is forecast to grow at an average of 1.5% per year, a third lower than the 2.1% growth rate in the previous decade, the report said.

The world's agricultural production industry is also being strongly affected by the slow recovery of the global economy, especially in developed economies.

Meanwhile, global food consumption is on the rise, especially in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Latin America due to population growth. As a result, average food prices will increase by 10% - 40% in the next decade, with a strong impact on people in developing countries.

Therefore, the report encourages governments to increase investment in agricultural production, such as providing technology to farmers to increase output.

Speaking at the launch of the report, FAO Director-General Graziano da Silva said high food prices were a driving force for agricultural production. However, it was important to ensure that poor farmers also benefited from this.
