Innovation for social justice and sustainable growth
On June 15, in Hanoi, the World Bank (WB) coordinated with the Ministry of Planning and Investment to organize a ceremony to announce projects and ideas receiving awards from the Vietnam Innovation Day 2011 program.
The purpose of the contest is to encourage organizations and small and medium-sized enterprises to proactively create ideas, research and implement them in production and business through specific activities, especially in the fields of energy saving; production, preservation of traditional oriental medicine and processing, improving the quality and agricultural services.
The competition focused on three topics: Efficient use of energy; Traditional herbal medicine; Agricultural products and services. This year's winning ideas were assessed to be creative, highly feasible, and have great applicability in the community.

The theme of the competition is “Innovation for social justice and sustainable growth”, emphasizing the criteria of using and improving the economic efficiency of local goods and products in the direction of clean production, environmental protection and easy application; integrated with the goal of increasing income, creating jobs, escaping poverty; combined with non-profit activities for the community.
In particular, the contest supports disadvantaged participants such as the poor, the elderly, the disabled, single women, etc.
From 332 projects and ideas submitted by businesses, the organizing committee selected 16 projects and ideas with the best quality and feasibility to receive support from the WB, with a total support budget of 8.5 billion VND.
Some typical projects and ideas include fuel-free pumps of the Agricultural and Rural Industry Electromechanical Center, saving electricity for lighting in hospitals of Hung Gia Service, Trade and Investment Company Limited (Ho Chi Minh City), recycling waste from craft villages in an ecological way with low cost of Bao Lam Fertilizer Company Limited...
These are the most outstanding projects and ideas to solve difficulties and challenges in developing the small, medium and micro enterprise community in localities. If implemented, they will create more jobs for the poor.
The Vietnam Innovation Day program aims to find and provide funding as initial support for small, innovative ideas for local development that are considered to have the potential to create certain impacts in the development field. The Vietnam Innovation Day program was first organized in 2003. Since its inception, the program has received more and more entries, with more and more partners and sponsors. Nearly 1,600 entries from all over the country have responded to the program over the past 8 years, showing a large volume of innovative domestic solutions to promote development and reduce poverty. Since 2003, nearly 40 sponsors have joined the World Bank to co-sponsor the program. In total, sponsors have contributed two-thirds of the awards. More than 2.4 million USD has been awarded to 231 innovative projects in many different fields. |
